Idina Menzel is an American actress, singer, and songwriter.

She was born as Idina Kim Mentzel on May 30, 1971 in Queens, New York, U.S as a daughter of Helene, a therapist, and Stuart Mentzel, a pajama salesman. She has Eastern European Jewish origins. She also has a sister Cara. She grew up in Syosset. Her parents divorced when she was 15. Idina attended Syosset High School. She changed the spelling of her surname to make it easier to pronunce for Americans.

She went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She worked asa wedding singer until 1995.

In 1996, Idina played Maureen Johnson in the Broadway show Rent. She played that role through 1997. She was nominated for a Tony Award for the show.

In 1998, she released her first album Still I Can't Be Still. It sold in 18 000 copies. She did a month-long tour to promote it.

In 2000, she played Kate in the off-Broadway show The Wild Party. She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and a Drama League Award. In 2001, she played Dorothy in Summer of '42 off-Broadway and Sheila in Hair at New York City Center Encores!

She won a Tony Award for her role of Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked in 2004.

She also played Maureen Johnson on the movie Rent based on the play, Shelby Cororan in Glee, and Nancy Tremaine in Disney's Enchanted.

Idina Menzel appeared in the Broadway show If/Then and she was nominated for a Tony Award for that role.

Idina Menzel married actor Taye Diggs on January 11, 2003. She gave birth to their son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs on September 2, 2009. Idina and Taye separated in late 2013 and divorced on December 3, 2014.

She began dating to Aaron Lohr and they appeared together at White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April 2015. In August 2015 they bought a house in Encino, Los Angeles, California. Idina announced that she is engaged to Lohr, via her Twitter account on September 23, 2016.

She also played Rachel's mom in Glee.
